How to get from Paris to Versailles by train or RER
Versailles is located near Paris and it's easy to reach by train or RER. This article outlines the options for getting there.
You have three options to travel to Versailles by train:
By RER C5 train (referred to as VICKY) heading to Versailles Rive Gauche. Versailles Rive Gauche is the nearest station to the castle. Upon exiting the train, follow the crowd. The RER C line stops at several stations in Paris: Saint Michel - Notre Dame, Musée d'Orsay, Invalides, Pont d'Alma, Champs de Mars Tour Eiffel. See the subway and RER map by clicking here.
By regular train line N from the Paris Montparnasse train station to Versailles Chantiers station.
By regular train line L from Paris Saint Lazare station to Versailles Rive Droite station.
By regular train line U from La Défense station to Versailles Chantiers station.

Which one to choose?
It all depends on where you are located in Paris. Since I live near Gare Saint Lazare, I choose this option even knowing that once in Versailles, I will walk about 15 minutes to the castle.
Some trains have Versailles as their final stop, while others head to different cities. I clarify this because you should check whether you are looking for a train that goes to Versailles or Chartres.
For the RER C, it's the same scenario. Depending on the time, the final stop is either Versailles or Saint Quentin en Yvelines.
I take this opportunity to update the information about the castle. The golden gate in the above photo is new. It didn't exist before. It was made based on a drawing from the French archives of a gate that actually existed at this same location.
The renovation of the Petit Trianon has been completed.
