Place du Trocadéro: The Square to Photograph the Eiffel Tower

Paris is a dream, but what would it be without the Eiffel Tower and Place du Trocadéro? The magic of the City of Light wouldn't be complete without the wonderful spaces and gardens of Trocadéro, but how many of you know its true history and wonders?

Trocadéro, the square in front of the Eiffel Tower

Trocadéro, whose name commemorates the Battle of Trocadero of 1823 between France and Spain, is an interesting monumental area of Paris that rises on the right bank of the Seine on the Chaillot hill, in the 16th arrondissement, and extends from the Palais de Chaillot to the Pont d'Iéna, which faces the Eiffel Tower.

Where today the Palais de Chaillot stands, there once was the Palais du Trocadéro, characterized by 2 towers, which was demolished in 1937 for the International Exposition of Paris.

The Palais de Chaillot was initially used as a NATO base, and it was here that, in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the UN General Assembly, which is why the square is also called the Esplanade des droits de l'homme.

The main entrance to the Palace is located on Place du Trocadéro et du 11 Novembre (in the 8th arrondissement), where the monument dedicated to Marshal Ferdinand Foch stands in the center.

Architecture of Trocadéro

The Trocadéro has a distinct arch-shaped form, with two large wings separated by the panoramic central square, known as Place or Esplanade du Trocadéro, and the Jardins du Trocadéro, which offer a spectacular view of the Eiffel Tower.

The two wings are also adorned with elevated sculptures and quotes from the famous French writer and poet Paul Valéry, and they house several museums and theaters, including the French National Maritime Museum, located in the south wing.

Jardins du Trocadéro

A lush green lung of about 10,000 square meters, these gardens were created in 1936 for the World Exposition and are now primarily famous for the spectacular Warsaw Fountain, made up of a series of cascading fountains leading to a larger basin lined with trees and bronze and stone sculptures.

This fountain provides suggestive water and light displays, especially when viewed at night from the top of the Eiffel Tower. In the dark hours, the jets of the fountains can reach heights of up to 40 feet.

How to Reach the Eiffel Tower from Trocadéro

The position of Trocadéro allows you to gaze at the Eiffel Tower and frame this postcard-worthy urban view. To get to the symbol of Paris from the monumental area of Trocadéro, simply cross the Seine via the 155 meters of Pont d'Iéna and start enjoying the spectacle of lights, green, and water that will unfold before your eyes.

The Trocadéro is one of the most prestigious and frequented areas of Paris, a favored photo shoot location for couples in love, and it also hosts shows and events, making it a great spot for skating or skateboarding.

And speaking of prestigious and chic areas of the City of Light, another must-stop during a trip to Paris is undoubtedly the Avenue des Champs Elysées.
