You have three options to get to Versailles by train:

By RER C5 train (called VICKY) heading to the final station Versailles Rive Gauche. Versailles Rive Gauche is the closest station to the palace. When you get off the train, follow the crowd. The RER C line passes through several stations in Paris: Saint Michel - Notre Dame, Musée d'Orsay, Invalides, Pont d'Alma, Champs de Mars Tour Eiffel. See the metro and RER map by clicking here.

By regular train line N from the Paris Montparnasse train station to Versailles Chantiers station.

By regular train line L from Paris Saint Lazare station to Versailles Rive Droite station.

By regular train line U from La Défense station to Versailles Chantiers station.

Which one to choose?

It all depends on where you are in Paris. Since I live near Gare Saint Lazare, I choose this option even knowing that once in Versailles, I walk about 15 minutes to the palace.

Some trains have Versailles as their final stop, while others go to a different city. I clarify this because you need to check if you are looking for a train with Versailles as the final stop or Chartres.

For the RER C, it's the same scenario. Depending on the time, the final stop is Versailles or Saint Quentin en Yvelines.

I take this opportunity to update the information about the palace. The golden gate in the photo above is new. It didn't exist before. It was created based on a drawing from the French archives of a gate that actually existed in this same location.

The renovation of the Petit Trianon is complete.
