The détaxe or tax refund is the refund of the VAT tax (Taxe sur la Valeur Ajoutée) included in the price of products purchased in France. Only individuals who do not reside in the European Union are eligible for this refund.

Conditions to Obtain the Détaxe

Reside outside the European Union and be over 16 years old.
Have spent over 100 euros in one day at Galeries Lafayette (excluding services and galerieslafayette.com). The advantage of shopping at Lafayette is that you can combine the price of several cheap items to reach the minimum of 100 euros.
Your stay in the European Union must be less than 6 months.
Exit from the European Union within 3 months after the date of purchase.

Step-by-Step Process to Get the Détaxe at Galeries Lafayette

Brazilians have an exclusive location to process the détaxe at Galeries Lafayette. It is the Le Concierge area, located on the 5th floor of the main store.

If you spent at Lafayette (excluding services and galerieslafayette.com) a minimum of 100.01 euros on the same day, go to Le Concierge with the cash, your passport, and our voucher (below).

There you will be served in reserved rooms by staff who speak Portuguese and you will calmly obtain the détaxe form without facing the lines on the ground floor of the store.

At this time, you will choose between receiving the tax refund on your credit card (12% of the total purchase amount) or in cash (in which case the percentage is just over 10% of the total purchase amount).

At the Airport

But be aware, the détaxe process does not end at Lafayette.

If you check in for your flight back to the United States (or leaving the European Union) in Paris, before doing so, you need to scan the détaxe form at the PABLO terminals (click here to read our article about PABLO). There's no need to mail the form.

If your check-in back to the United States is in another country within the European Union, you should check with customs in that country, stamp the form, place it in the prepaid envelope provided by Lafayette, and drop the envelope in a mailbox.
